I've been writing recently (surprise surprise) and I've been thinking of strategies for coming up with "unusual" names (not like Eric or Sally.)
When I need a new name, one thing I do is type words (that fit the character) in to google translate and select different languages until I find one I like.
Another technique I use is just taking names from other languages. Obviously you don't want to take a really popular name like Sakura (which btw means cherry blossom), because then people will just think you're stupid, but other more obscure names are awesome!
The last technique I'm going to tell you about is extremely simple: just take a name you like and switch a couple letters, or add some on. TADAH! Cool name! It's really easy, I do it all the time. :) Happy Writing!
